Call for Papers
GLOBAL BUSINESS PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES:
ENHANCING AND DEVELOPING WORLD MARKETS
THROUGH GLOBAL COMPETITIVE STRATEGIES
OBJECTIVES
The 7th World Business Congress of The International Management
Development Association (IMDA) will be held at the Melia Santo Domingo
Hotel and Casino from June 3 through 7, 1998 in Santo Domingo, Dominican
Republic. The Congress will be co-hosted by the Technologico de Santo Domingo
(INTEC) as well as a number of prominent local and regional businesses.
Papers and panel/special session proposals for presentation
and subsequent publication in the refereed congress proceedings are invited
from scholars, researchers, consultants, and public policy makers at all
levels, and managers of private and public firms. The congress is designed
to offer an excellent opportunity to meet colleagues from around the world
to share and discuss ideas and issues related to changes and developments
taking place in global business theory and practice, and update and increase
the understanding of business practices among the triad nations of Europe,
Americas, and Asia-Pacific, as well as their trading relationship with
others. In this congress, a special emphasis will be placed on global business
challenges and resultant competitive strategies of the companies regionally
and globally.
The congress location is the beautiful tree filled and
sophisticated city of Santo Domingo which offers congress participants
an opportunity to experience old world charm in a thriving modern city
with a population of over 2.2 million covering 144 square miles. Christopher
Columbus once stated 'this is the most beautiful land that human eyes has
ever seen.' Presentations from the Dominican Republic's modern business
community will provide congress participants with insights in Latin American
growth, change and internationalization. Strolling along the modern streets
and business districts at the heart of the modern city, Congress participants
will find the Zona Colonia. Here the reconstructed buildings and cobble
stone streets lined with shops and restaurants reflect the feelings and
times of the 15th century.
The Dominican Republic now hosts many former Cuban businesses
and is home to an important world class cigar industry as well as being
an important film making location. It has been the set for the God Father,
Robert Redford's Havana, and the Serpent and the Rainbow. The Dominican
Republic is known worldwide for its combination of charm, business talents
and extra ordinary historical attractions.
PROGRAM
The program of the congress is developed in such a way
to have an optimal integration of business communities, public policy makers
and academicians. A balanced mix of academic and practitioner issues ranging
from educational training to policy making aspects of the dynamic global
business will be addressed and presented in the congress sessions so that
a stimulating forum for all participants will be maintained. The congress
will include the keynote addresses, formal paper sessions, special sessions,
meet-the-editors session, and specialized panels on various global business
development issues in cooperation with local business persons and public
policy makers. A number of company visits and local tours will also be
arranged for congress participants. The Congress attendees will have the
opportunity to travel to one of the world's prime cigar companies, Leon
Jimenez. The firm's management will discuss the industry's movement from
Cuba, problems related to developing distribution and establishing a global
brand name. This management overview will be followed by a product tasting.

VENUE
The congress site Santo Domingo, the first capital city
in the New World, combines extraordinary historical attractions with all
of the conveniences of the 20th century. The city thrives as an international
city of business and commerce as well as the centerpiece of the New World's
historic and colonial treasures. It is also the site of the first cathedral,
fort, monastery, hospital, university, and city hall in the New World.
The average temperature is 77 degree F (25 C), with August being the warmest
month and January being and the coolest. Summer temperatures range from
80 to 95 F. The residents are known for being gentle, polite and kind natured.
The congress venue is the five star Melia Santo Domingo Hotel and Casino.
TRAVEL
Santo Domingo, the largest city in Dominican Republic,
is a principal destination of most international flights. Daily direct
flights from New York City, Miami, and San Juan, make Santo Domingo a favorite
and exciting site, offering easy access to other points of interest on
the island. Special round trip airfares from major US destinations to Santo
Domingo are negotiated with major US Airlines and the delegates will be
advised at a later stage about the respective discounted airfares.
